Presentation 1 Title: Engaging Citizen Mappers to Visualize the Global Ocean Plastic Crisis

Presentation 1 Abstract: The ocean plastic crisis has the world’s attention. Most ocean plastic is on coastlines. Rivers are the point of contamination for much plastic debris. Industries produce products via supply chains and strive to stop impurities prior to the point of contamination. Solving the ocean plastic crisis requires reverse engineering the supply chain model. First, by removing plastic from rivers before it reaches the sea. Second, working upstream through the plastic debris supply chain and stopping it before it reaches the rivers. Plastic debris is a geographically traceable problem. Using ArcGIS Online, plastic-fouled coastlines can be geolocated and sources of contamination determined, allowing solutions to be implemented. Using Survey123 allows citizen scientists, including Esri users, to geolocate and share data and images about plastic-fouled coastlines, providing global context, something not possible without GIS. Survey123 data feeds into ArcGIS Online and categorizes entries by source. Living Atlas layers of the world’s rivers and ocean currents allow the plastic debris supply chain to be imagined. A tracing tool visualizes how plastic might reach coastlines from distant rivers.
Presentation 2 Title: Expanding the Use of PO.DAAC Datasets through StoryMaps

Presentation 2 Abstract: NASA houses petabytes of publicly accessible Earth science data. The issue arises when non-expert users have difficulty visualizing these datasets. Most of these datasets are stored in scientific data formats with the most notable being Network Common Data Form (NetCDF). How can one access these datasets and visualize them with ease? The mission of the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) is to showcase NASA’s ocean and climate data and make them universally accessible for the public to use. We utilized StoryMaps by showing step-by-step tutorials on how to use PO.DAAC datasets and how to visualize them in Esri’s ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS Pro provided the tools and capabilities that can visualize these data formats. There are still difficulties that arise with NetCDF data that ArcGIS Pro was not able to visualize but utilizing Python scripts helped to overcome these difficulties. Two separate StoryMap use cases were created to showcase different uses of NASA PO.DAAC datasets. These use cases will provide non-experts the tools needed to explore a variety of PO.DAAC datasets.

Collaboration is fundamental to coastal management, the ability to efficiently share data and effectively communicate assists project teams as well as clients by creating dynamic project management. This presentation will illustrate how we are coupling Esri's Survey123 technologies with other platforms in order to share progress and critical data from the field while decreasing the effort to relay this information during coastal construction projects.
