- Geographical Drift Theory of Overdose Deaths: U.S. Drug Supply Shocks, 1999–2024The U.S. Census “mean center of population” provides a year-by-year view of how the nation’s population has shifted since 1790. We used the same principle with death certificate data from the NCHS WONDER to track the changing mean center of drug overdose deaths from 1999 to 2024 for five drug types. Mapping the mean center of overdose deaths each year reveals distinct spatial and temporal paths for every drug class. These paths can guide both intervention and policy decisions.

- A More Granular SVI Layer: Making National Tools Work for Rural CommunitiesImportant national tools like the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) give their data at the census tract level. This can cause problems for rural areas of the country like Napa County, with census tracts covering wide areas and spanning multiple different clustered communities. In this session, we will review the tricks and tools used to make a version of the SVI layer that worked for Napa County, and how by utilizing public resources and a basic ESRI user license you too can apply this strategy to make a product tailored for your area.
