Applying Analytics for Equity in Indigenous Communities
ArcGIS software offers a comprehensive suite of tools and functionalities to support a wide range of analytical tasks which can be powerful tools for highlighting challenges and promoting equity in indigenous communities. In addition to the analytical tools ArcGIS has, various visualization options and communication tools are an important part of highlighting the issues and vocalizing the needs of these communities. The papers in this session will showcase how the use of ArcGIS can elevate the issues these communities are facing and support meaningful change.

  • Burnout: Changing Fire Regimes & Health Effects in Indigenous Amazonia
    This project discovered a more efficient method to study fire-PM2.5 correlations using ArcGIS Pro, PM2.5 and predictive convolution neural networks. This project's outcomes shed light on healthcare gaps for Indigenous communities in the Amazon who are impacted by encroachment of deforestation fires on their lands. The project informs and advocates for better healthcare access and environmental protection in the Amazon, emphasizing Indigenous rights and voices.

  • Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe: Development for the Future
    A Hazard Mitigation Plan conducted by the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe in 2009 identified significant threats from tsunami and seal level rise to the Tribal community and lands and established the Tribe's lack of readiness for such and event. The intervening 15 years have seen extensive planning efforts, land purchases, and technical research and analysis to determine the best plan forward for the Tribe. Through the extensive use of ArcGIS tools the Tribe has been able to determine a path forward and to tell the story of their challenge and get significant financial support ($25M RAISE Grant).
