Advanced Geospatial Applications in Mining: Market Dynamics and Risk Reduction

This session will highlight the use of GIS technology in the mining industry to improve operations and reduce risk. The first presentation discusses how GIS was used to analyze the construction aggregate industry, including estimating supply and demand across the United States and forecasting market demand based on population data. The second presentation discusses the development of an information management system using ArcGIS tools to reduce risk at Anglo American by strategically managing mine waste dumps and stockpiles. The system includes branch versioning, web apps, and dashboards to provide real-time status updates at both the mine and global levels.

  • Visualizing Market Dynamics for the Construction Aggregate Industry
    Utilizing GIS, we took our data of construction aggregate producers with production data, paired it with modeled processes taking in population, aggregate consumption per capita, and distance factoring, and successfully generated a high-level analysis observing estimated market supply & demand for mined aggregate materials across the United States. We’ve likewise tied population forecasting in our models to produce forecasted market demand, and paired supplementary data to evaluate suitability analysis. These materials are a foundational cornerstone to infrastructure development.

  • Reducing Mine Waste Dumps Risk at Anglo American Using ArcGIS Enterprise

    In order to reduce risk at Anglo American, it is imperative that mine waste dumps and stockpiles are strategically managed. The risk management process is applied to ensure adequate controls are in place during the design phase and that said controls are effective. To support this an information management system was developed using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Portal and Cityworks. Using branch versioning, web apps and dashboards each mine can view their own mine waste dumps risk profile, at the same time providing real-time combined status view of the mine dumps both at mine level and globally.
