Volusia County’s coast offers unique opportunities to deploy location solutions. An opportunity came to IT GIS to find efficiencies in the environmental management of coastal sea turtle nests. This program involves deploying 50+ volunteers daily, across miles of beach to locate sea turtle nests. A paper intensive process was transformed into a highly digital process that led to 1,000s of hours saved each year through the deployment of several components of the ESRI GIS Platform. They can export, analyze, and visualize their data in an instant. Products are organized with a portal site.

This study aimed to identify the habitats of different shark species along the coastlines of North America. Using various geospatial analysis techniques, this project resulted in the highlighting areas of high shark activity, including habitats for living, hunting, and mating. The findings of this research will provide valuable information about the behavior of various shark species and illustrate how geospatial tools can be utilized in addressing environmental concerns, such as monitoring marine ecosystems, tracking species, and identifying at-risk habitats.
