- State Payday Bans and the Geography of the Alternative Financial Sector
Alternative Financial Sector (AFS) offers unsecured credit lines to people with limited credit access. Due to AFS providers targeting vulnerable consumers with costly loans, 16 U.S. states banned payday lending. Research suggests that individuals in banned states may be targeted by AFS providers in nearby permitting states. This study uses Census Bureau data to map AFS establishment availability in the U.S. and uses a difference-in-difference model to test if state payday bans correlate with concentration of AFS lenders in ZIP codes located near state lines bordering banning states.

- Mapping the World’s Languages
The world’s 7,168 languages add to the richness and diversity of human expression. The SIL Mapping Team maintains the language map of the world. We will present the workflows of creating maps that display the language homeland locations and their linguistic relationships. We will explore data sources, updating processes and design, production and maintenance of maps. The data and finished maps are used in various aspects of corporate planning of language development projects worldwide. These projects promote literacy, education and human flourishing within the speakers’ community.
